Workflow Design

Recognizing the need for process improvement and increased efficiency is not enough. Companies literally have to design in process improvements into their everyday flow. Change does not just happen; it is a purposeful endeavor that requires the commitment and ownership of those individuals responsible for performing the job. Workflow design is the evaluation and implementation of deliberate layout improvements that are focused on a process layout or a product layout. Workflow Design must also take into consideration the type of capacity planning strategy that the organization has employed and whether your product or service requires an intermittent or continuous transformation process.

How we may help:

Workflow Design is an iterative process that uses many tools and techniques to identify the most efficient method of production. There must be a clear understanding of the management objectives for cycle time, throughput and efficiency. Once these targets are identified, the actual design of the workflow is straightforward. We can help by using the following techniques in order to analyze your current workflow and make recommendations on how to improve the performance:

  • Cellular Layouts
  • Relationship Diagramming
  • Muther's Grid
  • Flexible Layouts
  • Service Layouts: Front Office vs. Back Office designs
  • Efficiency: Sum of work element times / workstations * CTa
  • Cycle Time: CTd = Time available / Unit output desired
  • Line Balancing Techniques: N = Sum Individual Time / Cd
  • Sequencing Techniques: FCFS, SPT, LPT, DDATE, Johnson's Rule, Critical Ratio or Customer Priority
